how to retwist dreads at home with clips

Knowing how to retwist dreads at home with clips is one of the most valuable skills that a person can have.

I have this viewpoint because, as a fellow loc haver of three years, I’ve spent a majority of my dreadlock journey paying other people for retwists.

It wasn’t until my “loc-tition” decided to push my retwist appointment back twice that I decided to learn how to retwist dreadlocks at home.

Like any new skill, learning how to retwist dreads at home with clips won’t be easy at first(despite how easy people make it look online).

In this post, I’m going to show you how to retwist dreadlocks with clips that you can get from any hair store.

Here are some of the essential products you’ll need for this retwisting tutorial…

Flax Seed Gel

Flax seed gel is healthier for your hair than traditional retwisting gel and gives a similar hold. If you aren’t keen on making your own flax gel at home, I recommend purchasing Aunt Jackie’s flax seed gel.

Metal Clips

This retwist method requires you have at least two pack of metal clips(to cover your entire head in full without running short of supply).

Here’s How To Retwist Dreads At Home!

1. Prep Your Locs

The first step to retwisting your dreadlocks is to prepare your hair.

I typically start this process by running my fingers in between each loc strand and making sure the new growth isn’t causing them to intertwin.

I also like to prepare my locs for retwist by moisturizing my scalp with rosewater, this is great for allowing new hair growth to soften and become easier to twist.

2. Start From The Back

I’ve found that retwisting your dreadlocks from the back, then working your way to the front, makes the process easier(your arms get tired so it’s best to use your peek energy in the toughest angle first).

You should retwist your hair in front of a mirror that’s reflecting off of a another mirror so you can see the back of your head. The easiest way to retwist for me has been the palm rolling method.

This method of retwisting simply entails that you twist the dreadlock clockwise until the root is tight, using your opposite hand to help guide the full rotation.

Apply a small amount of flax gel to the dreadlock’s root before palm rolling.

3. Clipping The Dreadlock

After you’ve palm rolled the dreadlock, place a loc clip deep into the root of the hair so that it holds.

You’ll repeat this process for each dreadlock of your head.

4. Drying

Now that you have your dreadlocks clipped, it’s time to dry off the roots so that your retwists maintain their shape.

You can use a standard blow dryer for this process. Dry your full head of dreadlocks for twenty minutes and make you wrap them with a bonnet or hat before bed.

5. Unclipping

This didn’t have to be a step honestly, but because it can be a lengthy process I added it.

Unclipping can be a pain, literally, so make sure that you take this step with caution.

Now that you’ve taken all of your clips out of the dreadlocks, you can now experience the satisfaction of having a fresh set of retwists!

I do want to advise you that every person’s hair is different. If this method of retwisting doesn’t last for you, try a different method!

Learning to adapt to the style of retwisting that you prefer is essential to your long-term success.
